Schools go hi-tech with digital records Tech Firms Develop Software Programmes M.Ramya/ TNN CHENNAI: Schools in Chennai have lapped up innovative technology and hope that the office room may soon become a thing of the past by replacing them with modern education communication systems. Private technology firms are now increasingly getting involved in developing school-specific software pro-grammes and modules.

The firms are hoping that if their technology solution eases administrative work in an educational institutionthen the green steel racks and bulky folders could be replaced by computers. At the Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Millenium School in St Thomas Mounta private firm Educomp Solu-tions has helped set up an interactive website that helps working parents keep track of their child’s progress in school.

“Parents are thrilled about the interactivity that the website allows” says the school principal Sita Um-amaheshwaran. “We encourage the parents to keep the site as the home page on their home PCs or lap-tops so they can immediately find whether the management has declared a rainy holiday.” Two other firms Jessi Information Technologies and Umecs are also in the process of marketing their com-prehensive web-based software that aids the management of educational institutions.

“Our product is ideal for residential and international schoolsas it will allow the parent or guardian to look at all the relevant de-tails at a time that is convenient to himinstead of carrying a bulk of pamphlets or papers around” says C Peter Rex Charlydirector (Marketing)Umecs.

Umecs started developing the product a year back. The product was ready in June but the schools were busy with the admissions and distribution of books and uniforms. So the launch got a little delayed in the citysays S Karthikeyandirector (Product Development)Umecs. Siddhartha Jegannathanmanaging director of Jessi Software Consultancy Servicessaid their AcademyX programmewhich offers administration software for schools and collegeshas been taken up by Zion Ma-triculation School in Selaiyur and Daniel Thomas Matriculation School in Aminjikarai and Arumbakkam.

“The response is promising. We sell it to one school every week. It reduces a lot of the working time of the school administration” he claimed. Most schools take up the Rs 45000 to Rs 50000 package. “Packages that have features like bio-metric access controls and Net profiles of students could cost as much as Rs 1 lakhbut most schools seem to find such features intimidating” Siddhartha says. The project has received good response from schools across the state. Umecs’ package is already being implemented in schools in KrishnagiriVelloreTiruvannamalaiTiruchi and Theniclaimed Petera company representative.
